Pentagram – the great mysterious symbol

The pentagram has been recognised across cultures for thousands of years as one of the most powerful and meaningful symbols, with magical implications.

While it was once the symbol of both the planet and the goddess Venus, it later became the symbol of recognition for the Pythagoreans.
Plato, for his part, called it the greatest and most powerful sign of all. Universal laws can be derived from geometric and arithmetic knowledge, which are reflected in spiritual principles.

Nature generously reveals its secrets to the observer: It is worth looking for the golden section (e.g. sunflower), the Fibonacci numbers (e.g. pine cone) or the pentagram (e.g. starfish) and exploring the underlying principles. The pentagram combines the golden section with the principle of life. As in nature, where that which is similar is reproduced from that which exists, the geometry of the pentagram can be continued in both directions as often as desired.

Pentagram

In a spiritual context, man’s task is to “take up his spiritual heritage as an image of God and regain his full power” (Elias Rubenstein). This is exactly what the pentagram with the point up represents: the dominion of the spirit (quintessence) over nature. The other four points represent the four elements (earth, air, water, fire), which must be balanced and refined as a student on the spiritual path.

This happens step by step in the Lower Mysteries, the four lower spheres of the Kabbalah Tree of Life.

In regard to spiritual self-determination, the pentagram is the sign of the Word made flesh and the primary symbol of the Mars Sphere.

In the Mystery tradition it also represents the creative power inherent in man and the manifestation of the life force. The pentagram contains the aspect of Redemption (the Star of Bethlehem), which shows mankind the way from the Fall of Man, through the process of learning, to Ascension.

This star polygon is often used as a protective amulet, as it is said to protect against demons and evil influences. It is also the means for the counter spell of so-called black magic. When the pentagram is turned upside down, its meaning is reversed and it appeals to the dark side and its powers.

The tools of the Hermetic Academy teach the use of the pentagram to gain conscious spiritual control over elemental nature.

What is a hexagram symbol?

This mysterious symbol is a six-pointed star. While the pentagram represents the human being (microcosm), the hexagram represents the world (macrocosm).
