Esotericism – The Secret Doctrine

The term “esotericism” is widely known today, although its original and deeper meaning is probably known to only a few people. In modern understanding, it has become associated with a thriving economic industry. As a result, the true and profound meaning of the term is often overlooked.

Esotericism – Anyone who searches for the term „esotericism“ on the Internet would quickly come to the conclusion that it is a catch-all category for irrational mumbo-jumbo.

Practices such as Reiki, spiritual healing, fortune telling, channeling, astrology, crystal therapy, or even Breatharianism are marketed as esoteric practices. This misconception is one of the main reasons why the term has lost its original authenticity.

It is a sad fact that many seekers of meaning end up paying for expensive weekend seminars, only to learn misconceptions and half-truths…then, pass these on to other seekers again for a considerable fee!!

Esotericism

In its original sense, esotericism refers to a philosophical doctrine accessible only to a limited, “inner” circle, as opposed to exotericism, which is the “outer” aspect of a philosophical doctrine.

Aristotle was one of the earliest proponents of this concept, referring to his courses for laymen and beginners as “exoteric” (outwardly directed) to distinguish them from strictly scientific philosophical instruction.

The use of the word “esotericism” began in the early 19th century with a literary work on ancient Gnosticism.

In the mid-19th century, the noun was mentioned in a French general encyclopedia as a term for secret teachings. The term gained significant recognition within the occult vocabulary through works on Kabbalah and magic by the French occultist Éliphas Lévi.

Magic has been a hidden science since the dawn of mankind, and it still is today. It is a teaching that is passed on in strict secrecy through initiatory orders.

Numerous speculations about secret magical knowledge are the content of countless pseudo-esoteric bestsellers that have nothing to do with authentic magical practice.

Students of the Hermetic Academy, on the other hand, gradually gain access to well-founded esoteric knowledge, which, when correctly applied in everyday life, leads to the realization of true “humanity”. This is the true teaching of esotericism, which gradually leads an unknowing person to enlightenment.
